USDF Dressage Show at Circle E Equestrian

Seymour, WI

Whether or not you have ever participated in the sport, I think we can all agree that dressage is an art. The amount of obedience, grace, and flexibility displayed by experienced riders and their composed, disciplined horses always takes my breath away. Dressage is a strengthening exercise that requires the horse to maintain a calm and attentive manner while demonstrating balance and dexterity. By enhancing the natural movement of the horse, dressage is like watching a beautiful ballet. And while the sport embodies grace and professionalism, watching a competition live is nothing short of thrilling. That’s why I was so excited when Patti Eisenrite asked me to photograph the USDF’s Midwest show at the Circle E stables.

But first, a little bit more about the USDF. The USDF, or United States Dressage Foundation, is the only national membership organization dedicated to dressage. Founded in the early seventies, the organization nurtures an encouraging community of competitors, enthusiasts, and dressage newbies. The USDF also licenses and recognizes competitions around the United States throughout the year. I was excited to photograph their Midwest Circuit show at the Circle E Equestrian Stables in Seymour, WI, over the course of the two days it was held.

Circle E is a centrally located equestrian center that offers its patrons a little bit of everything. From spacious stables for boarding to a large indoor arena for training and shows, this equestrian center is dedicated to providing top of the line training programs and is a leading spot for shows and competitions. Patti, the owner, contacted me before the Midwest Circuit show in hopes of securing a photographer to document the exciting annual event. It was a thrill working alongside such an experienced equestrian, and I also immensely enjoyed working with Deb Heier, the show organizer. Both of these ladies were imperative to the success of the show, and they pulled it off with as much composure and grace as the competitors.

The days spent photographing the show were long yet well spent. I loved meeting so many competitors and watching them compete alongside their stunning horses. There was so much talent on display and it was a privilege to capture it on camera. While I enjoyed every moment, I left the show eager to climb right into bed. There was hardly enough coffee in the world to keep me going against a backdrop of chilly and rainy days! But the vigor of the show and the excitement of the participants was energizing, and the sun often peaked out from behind the clouds to remind us it was still there.

Dressage is a unique sport with a rich and dynamic history that dates back hundreds of years. It is a blast to get to experience it up close as a part of my profession. I find all equestrian competitions to be stimulating and engaging and am always excited at the prospect of sharing my expertise and skillset with new clients. If you are a rider that competes or an equestrian center that hosts shows, you may be interested in learning about the benefits of having professional photos taken. I can’t wait to document your moment in history.
