Did you know that there are over 350 breeds of horses? The number is staggering, but not too surprising. From the Appaloosa to the Zemaituka, horses with origins stretching around the world can be found almost anywhere, from international horse shows to a farm in your own hometown. As an equestrian photographer, I relish the opportunity to interact with so many different breeds. While each breed has identifiable characteristics and traits, working with the animals on an interpersonal level has helped me appreciate just how unique each horse’s personality can be. So was the case with Tommé, a gorgeous pure Friesian Stallion.
Friesians are notoriously loyal and willing horses, and Tommé, with his easy-going temperament and cheerful disposition, was no exception. He has quite the journey behind him, going back and forth from Wisconsin to Florida several times before finally finding an incredible home with Heidi and Eric. Aside from his gorgeous looks, Tommé is an accomplished competitor and frequently participates in combined driving matches. But above all else, I was amazed by the patient and sweet nature of this lovely stallion, and I couldn’t wait to capture his essence on camera.
Tommé was subdued and calm as he waited in the cross ties before making his debut, but he was by no means camera shy. In front of the camera, he was a star, prancing in the way only a Friesian can as he arched his neck and showed off his beautiful composition. His mane and tail, two matching waterfalls of dark and silky waves, were so long that we had to hold his hair off the ground as we walked. The moment was somewhat dreamy—reminiscent of a bride’s train and veil carefully tended to as she makes her way down the aisle.
Once we were satisfied with the ensuing results, Tommé slowly relaxed into a luxurious grooming session as Heidi and Eric carefully tended to his luxurious black locks, meticulously braiding the strands of hair back into place to protect it from damage. He let me give him some snuggles as he rested, and I was instantly obsessed with his soft muzzle—it was like running my hands across velvet.
I was delighted with the results of Tommé’s session. In addition, it was an exciting opportunity to produce some fine art images for the Great Lakes Friesian Association, who will be using the full-body black background photo for the cover of their 2021 calendar. Tommé is a stunning horse with a personality to match—and I am thrilled that so many will get to appreciate his beauty as we enter into an exciting new year.
