It probably will not come as a surprise that I love horse shows. The pulsating energy, the eager anticipation, and the hardworking riders invoke a sense of excitement and accomplishment. From barrel racing to rodeos to show jumping, I have always enjoyed watching riders and their horses perform at some of the highest levels of talent. That is why I was so excited when Northstar Equestrian Center at Greenfield Farms asked me if I would work as their photographer for their upcoming schooling show. The riders, be they experienced or just starting out, put on an unforgettable show!

A schooling show is always a fun event to attend because of the wide range of experience levels and diversity among riders. These types of shows are inexpensive and practical ways for riders to prepare for ranked shows and develop their skillset. Schooling shows provide ample learning opportunities for both the rider and horse, not to mention a chance to acclimate to new environments and exciting surroundings. But while the rules may be less strict and the stakes may be lower, the riders still seize the opportunity to do their very best and perform as if it were a ranked show.

The event at Northstar attracted riders from all around, from the experienced looking to sharpen their skills to the beginners seeking a first-time experience. I was in awe at the professionalism of so many of the riders, and their grace and performance under pressure was a testimony to their ultimate skill and foreseeable future as competitors. It certainly did not hurt that it was the perfect day for a show, balmy with just the perfect amount of sunshine. As with any show, there were many people working hard behind the scenes to make sure everything operated smoothly and on schedule. I enjoyed working in such a relaxed and laid-back environment.

There are many benefits to barns and equestrian centers hiring a professional photographer for shows and events. Advertising, content marketing, and community outreach are just a few examples. It also gives riders the opportunity to see themselves in action with their horse, which serves as a souvenir to a job well done. In lieu of shaky cell phone snapshots and questionable digital quality, a professional photographer can produce crisp, sharp images of objects in motion. The perfect action shot—every time.

By building solid relationships with the riders in the area, equestrian centers become an integral part of the equestrian community. They offer many opportunities such as lessons, horse boarding, trail rides, and of course, shows. Equestrian centers encourage growth and learning opportunities amongst all of their members. So, if you are an equestrian center or community barn looking to hire a photographer for any upcoming events, I would love the chance to connect with you. I look forward to the opportunity to watch as you grow alongside your community.
