Niamh and Prince
A beloved tradition with origins stretching well into the early 19th century, the rodeo is one of the best places for cowgirls to showcase their skills and compete against one another in competitive events such as barrel racing, bareback riding and steer roping. To compete in the rodeo takes grace, skill, and strength, and I recently had the privilege to meet and photograph the young woman who currently represents the sport right here in Wisconsin. Meet Miss Teen Rodeo Wisconsin Niamh and her horse Prince!
Niamh (pronounced Nee-Ov) needed senior portraits, and I was excited to showcase both her love of horses and her love for the sport in her customized session. Becoming Miss Teen Rodeo is no simple feat, and Niamh and Prince worked together to rise up against the challenges and achieve such an incredible honor. Just by spending a few hours with Niamh it was clear how much she deserved the title. Her hard-working attitude and love of the sport simple exuded as she told me about her history with the rodeo and with horses. Her friendship with Prince is key to their success—the two work together seamlessly and they respond to each other with respect and kindness. I’m in love with capturing genuine relationships between girls and their horses, and these two were no exception.
The photoshoot was on Niahm’s property in Waupaca, Wisconsin. Her home is preceded by a beautiful, winding driveway that stretches past skyscraping pine trees, a pretty pond, and their beautiful barn. The air was heavy with humidity, but soon after our session began the sun began to set beyond the trees, and the warm, dewy light created the perfect backdrop for pictures. Angela Marie Makeup Artistry did hair and makeup for the shoot and Niamh provided her own outfits, and needless to say, she looked like a rodeo queen!
Niamh’s dad joined us for the shoot and the three of us (four, counting Prince) couldn’t have had more fun. There was a lot of laughter thanks to the many dad jokes that we were continuously subjected to, but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t enjoy them! At the end of the day, Niamh and I both agreed that while our dads may enjoy embarrassing us, we certainly wouldn’t trade them for the world. Fun fact: Niamh’s dad is from Ireland, hence her unique name. The name means “bright” or “radiant”, two words I think perfectly describe the girl herself, as well as the pictures we captured.
