Winter Equine Session

Waukesha, WI

I have always believed that family should come first. My parents instilled in me at an early age a strong sense of identity, and I know now that my family is behind the person I am today. So often, our families shape who we are. And the best thing about what makes a family is that sometimes we are privileged enough to make our own. Is it not true that even our four-legged friends become family we choose? I would like for you to meet Devon and Jeff—a husband and wife who have found this sentiment to ring true.

The couple came to me with the hopes of documenting a special time in their lives and updating their family photos. They had not had professional photos done since their wedding, which was fourteen years ago, and they wanted to capture a sense of warmth and love amidst a wintery background. Their family session included many of their beautiful animals, including a bay Arabian mare, Gracie, a chestnut AQHA gelding, Rugs, and their sweet adopted dog, Quinn, named after the television favorite Dr. Quinn, The Medicine Woman. Not pictured is her devastatingly sweet kitty Sawyer, who would reach his paws up towards your neck for a “hug”.

Before the camera came out, Angela Marie Makeup Artistry assisted behind the scenes with hair and makeup. She listened carefully to what Devon was envisioning and she nailed it, as usual. Our session took place on an overcast and chilly day on Devon’s family farm in Waukesha, Wisconsin, the snow casting off a dazzling sparkle. It was a sentimental spot for Devon—the property has been in her family for many generations. I loved learning about the history of the farm and hearing Devon express her dedication to her animals and her family. She has a huge heart for animals and has adopted several throughout her lifetime, and this love shone through as we incorporated the horses and Quinn into several of our pictures.

Even though it was chilly, the warm conversation and light mood kept us all in good spirits as we enjoyed the fun that came with the session. The horses were frisky and full of energy. On our way to the first location, Rugs reared and bucked—grateful for my experience with frolicsome horses, I was able to calm him down with one hand while balancing my camera in the other. I was heartened by Devon’s appreciation as she expressed: “This is why I wanted to hire a professional and experienced equine photographer!” While it’s true that most sessions go without a snag, horses are powerful, and they can be unpredictable. I am happy to be able to extend my hand and experience during these sessions to ensure a safe and calm experience for horses and their owners.

Families come in all shapes and sizes and updating family photos is a perfect way to showcase yours. Whether it is a special moment in your lives, or the days seem to be going by too fast, there is always a reason to get your family together to freeze the time by means of special photos. No matter what makes your family unique, I want to meet you. If you are in the market for new family photos, I can’t wait to hear from you. Let’s show the world what makes your family special.
