For many equestrians, learning to ride horse came shortly after learning how to walk. But for others, owning a horse might have felt like a distant dream growing up. I have heard stories from fellow horsewomen who dreamed of owning their own horse since childhood, and how it felt when they finally made their dream a reality. It is no secret that horses are a lot of hard work—they require time, patience, and unconditional love. But they make everything worth it, becoming irreplaceable parts of our family. And we wouldn’t have it any other way!
My client Jenna did not grow up owning her own horse, but she was exposed to them through friends from an early age. Being around horses in her youth sparked in Jenna a desire to one day own a horse of her own. For years she held on to this goal with unwavering determination. The time waiting was well worth it. Just two years ago and Jenna became the owner to Bill, a stunning Percheron Gelding. A gentle giant, Bill is twenty years old and Jenna could not have hoped for a better first horse. She wanted a session dedicated to her bond with Bill as well as her two dogs, Moose and Bear, and I was excited to participate in celebrating their sweet friendship and loving bond.
Our session took place at a client exclusive location in Seymour, Wisconsin, on a sunny and warm summer day. Angela Marie Makeup Artistry did Jenna’s hair and makeup, and wouldn’t you agree Jenna looks so stunning in front of the camera? Jenna’s mom, Renae, was also a huge help behind the scenes. She helped hold the dogs back until it was their time to be in front of the camera, and she was an amazing assistant in using a squeaky toy and horse noises to get Bill’s ears perked up. Bill was a natural in front of the camera, and I fell in love with his beautiful and kind amber eyes.
It was such a happy session, full of many fun moments. I loved learning about Jenna’s journey towards horse ownership—Renae told me that Jenna’s love of horses was a real motivating factor during tough times at school. You could really sense Jenna’s care for Bill while we got ready for the session, keeping a watchful eye on him as he relaxed outside. While we were busy with hair and makeup, Bill happily strolled through the pasture, enjoying the sun and making his way through the lush and abundant green grass. During the shoot itself, Bill was happy and eager to please, responding well to all of Jenna’s cues. He was also very curious about a neighboring farmer working the land, listening to the nearby sounds with rapt attention. The one thing none of us could enjoy? All of the bugs!
Our pets become our family, and just as we cherish and celebrate our relationships with our family members, we feel the same connection with our pets. Far too often they leave our lives too soon, and professional photography can give us solid proof of our most loving memories.
