Winter Horse & Rider Session
As the days continue to slip away, I have to remind myself that in just a few short months, the Midwest will once again become blanketed by snow. While I live for the warmth of a golden summer afternoon, I look forward to the little cushion of autumn in-between seasons. It is often while reminiscing over sessions like Angela and Dawn’s that I remember that winter, while often cold and blustery, has its moments of unmistakable beauty. My sessions often take place in the afternoon as we chase the “golden hour”, which is the sliver of time right before sunset, but Angela’s photoshoot took place early in the day. The morning brings with it a plethora of advantages—soft, dewy morning light, the sun just peeking over the horizon, fresh rays catching against newly fallen snow. It was a cold day, but Angela took advantage of her adorable winter wardrobe by bundling up in charming layers and, in a few shots later, stunning in a gorgeous red dress. Dawn is Angela’s heart horse, and Angela has invested so much time and love into this gorgeous girl. Angela has trained Dawn in a multitude of disciplines, including jumping and dressage. You can even find these ladies on the trail, just enjoying their time together. Dawn is a Percheron/Morgan crossbred, and she has such a charming and sweet disposition. Because of her easygoing and eager-to-please personality, Angela has successfully leased Dawn out to others when they have needed a horse. We had a wonderful time against the backdrop of fresh snow. The session took place on Angela’s property, a sprawling and beautiful farm here in Wisconsin. I enjoyed hearing about Angela’s relationship with Dawn and loved capturing their sweet and deep bond on camera. The bond between a rider and their heart horse is a friendship like no other, and it always reminds me of the relationship I shared with my own heart horse, Riley. You don’t need a special occasion to get professional photographs with your horse. The relationship you share with your best friend is a cause worth celebrating. I want to capture that bond on camera, leaving you with tangible memories to treasure for the rest of your life. Whether it’s a session under a lovely blue summer sky or poses between the snow-laden boughs of pine trees, the perfect photos starring you and your horse are just around the corner.
