Following the Caswell Barrel Races in 2020 was definitely a highlight for the year, especially amidst a global pandemic. The races were such a morale and mood booster, and it was improbable to leave one of the shows without feeling happier than when you arrived. The entire Caswell family was imperative to each show's success, and being past clients of mine, I know how hard they all work to ensure that their patrons and competitors have a great time. The Caswells gear the event towards welcoming newcomers to the sport of barrel racing, and they pride themselves on being supportive no matter how experienced one may be.
The shows wouldn't be possible if it were not for the hard work of the Caswell family. Nick, one of the Caswell sons, sets up and oversees the sound and tech systems. Mark, the Caswell patriarch, is an engaging and charismatic announcer that knows just what to say to keep the audience engaged and laughing. He is also quick to share upbuilding words of encouragement to newcomers. And Mark's wife, Linda, is busy behind the scenes, managing the office work, entries and providing a listening ear for anyone who may have questions.
The barrel races occur at the Caswell Ranch in Neenah, Wisconsin, and the shows took place against an everchanging backdrop of tempestuous midwestern weather. From beautiful blue skies and sunshine to intense downpours, I enjoyed the challenge of documenting and photographing the runs no matter what the weather that day presented. Every now and then, there would be a glorious sunset on a clear day—the perfect recipe for gorgeous backlit action shots.
There were many highlights during the Caswell barrel races, but one that will always stick with me was watching Bree King and her gelding Nike absolutely slay on his first race back from a long rehab journey. Moments like this impress on me the resilience of both horse and rider. Anything is indeed possible when someone sets their mind to it and moves forward with a goal in mind.
2020 was far from anyone's favorite year, but I was grateful to have moments sprinkled throughout that offered me exciting opportunities to photograph horses in action. The Caswell Barrel Races were a joyous occasion that celebrated resilience, hard work, and passionate beginnings, and I look forward to all that 2021 has in store for them. This year they will be hosting a jackpot race mid-week and introducing a Point Series race with $15,000 in year-end rewards. If you live in the area and have been eager to explore barrel racing as a sport, look no further. The Caswell Ranch is a great place to start, and it fosters an environment that is invaluable to everyone—new and experienced, and anyone in between.
