Good conversation, warm weather, and the stunning backdrop of a pristine equestrian center—can you ask for anything better? I certainly think not—especially when surrounded by some of the prettiest horses the Midwest has to offer. I was in for a treat when we made arrangements to obtain equestrian portraits and action shots at the Stonegate Equestrian Center in Hazelhurst, Wisconsin.

The owner of Stonegate, Lynne Foster, was kind enough to allow me to photograph her gorgeous German Riding Pony mare and adorable foal, Will. German Riding Ponies are known for their naturally sweet and docile disposition, and these two were no exception. The breed is suited well for dressage and jumping, and Lynne often shows her horses at Wellington, Florida, during the Winter Equestrian Festival. Will eventually will be trained in dressage, and while it was hard to imagine him as anything but the adorable foal in front of us, it was clear that he had a bright future ahead of him.

Bri Imlah, the barn manager of Stonegate Equestrian, was imperative in getting the photographs I was after. She was hands-on from start to finish, from grooming the horses to assisting me as I obtained the perfect action shot. I truly couldn't have done it without her! To express my appreciation, I had her bring out her mare PR Allison Bay, an AQHA registered Quarter Horse, for some pictures of their own. Bri hopes to show PR Allison Bay in AQHA Congress and potentially the World Show, and their confidence as a team was apparent as we set about in taking some pictures. The bond between them was a blast to capture on camera, and I was so impressed by Bri—in 0.002 seconds, this girl went from horse wrangler to model status!
    Our session concluded on a high note as the beautiful day came to an end. From Will and his dam's adorable relationship to the incredible bond shared by PR Allison Bay and Bri, I was overwhelmed by all the special moments. As you look over the following images from the session, I'm sure you will agree that it was one for the books.
