Wisconsin is known for its frigid winters, short and dark days covered in blankets of bright white snow. But something that surprises many is just how hot it can get in this Midwestern state. It certainly is a place of extremes, with our icy winters and stuffy summers, but as someone born and raised here, I wouldn’t have it any other way…well, I could maybe do without the -40-degree wind chill in December.
My session with Katie and her gorgeous POA horse KC took place on one of the hottest days in June. Despite the heat, we managed to get Katie some fantastic senior pictures that celebrated the beauty of summertime. The session took place at Wild Rose Ranch in Baraboo, Wisconsin, which was such a lovely backdrop for Katie’s pictures. With the rolling pastures and rustic fences, I couldn’t have picked a better place and was so grateful to the ranch’s owner, Michelle, for generously welcoming us onto her property for our session.
KC and Katie are the loveliest pair and absolutely lit up the camera. KC is an eleven-year-old Gelding. He is a stunning Pony of the Americas, and capturing his gorgeous conformation and leopard appaloosa coat was such a fun challenge. Despite all the obstacles from being a senior during COVID, Katie has maintained a positive outlook. Her infectious personality was such a joy to be around! Showing wisdom beyond her years, I loved hearing her stories about KC and her interest in horses which stemmed from an early age—something which certainly did not turn out to be “just a phase”!
Despite the heat of a scorching summer day, our session was full of lovely, memorable moments. One of my favorites was when KC dropped a mouthful of grass on Katie’s head just as I was taking a picture. His goofy and kind personality, guided by her loving and gentle care, was a testament to their powerhouse relationship. Katie has spent years working with KC to improve his skills and abilities, and they have come a long way from their first days together.
Special thanks to all those who helped behind the scenes, including Alissa, Katie’s mom, and Angela from Angela Marie Makeup Artistry, who never fails to deliver a stunning final look in hair and makeup. Of course, another thanks to Michelle, who let us use her lovely ranch for our pictures.
